10 expectations of students - Big Picture

10 Expectations that students have of their teachers to improve their learning

1. Relationships - does my teacher know me well enough and help me form relationships

2. Relevance - is learning connected to my likes and interests and world

3. Time - can I learn at my own pace and go deep and broad

4. Timing - does everyone learn the same thing at the same time or in the order that suits them

5. Play - do I have opportunities to explore, make mistakes, tinker and make guesses

6. Practice - can I engage in deep and sustained practise of skills I need to learn

7. Choice - do all students follow the same path or do we have real choices

8. Authenticity - is my learning recognised as valuable by my family and community

9. Challenge - is there appropriate challenge that is high and meaningful

10. Application - am I applying what I am learning in a real world situation?

PD blog Emailing

Testing emailing a blog post. Learning at ELN meeting with Mark Osbourne.

How to:
Go to settings on your blogger dashboards.
Click on 'mobile and email'.
Add secret word into box where blogger has given you an email address to email posts to.
Save - you now have an email address that you can email a blog post to.  Save this address into your contacts on your gmail and/or phone.

You can choose whether to publish posts instantly or to save post to drafts so you can check before posting.

You can email movies to your blog using this whereas you can't use your ipad or iphone blogger app to upload a movie to your blog. (I haven't tried this, but others at the session said this is so)

Taking fear out of failure

Define smart failure. It's the first attempt at learning. 

Reward smart failures in addition to successes. 

Make smart risk taking transparent. Share how you made mistakes and how you learned from them.  - Mark Osborne ELN PD

Ambiguity

Ambiguity creates. Order reproduces.

If we don't allow ambiguity to do its work then we might find that the order we establish is incomplete, not well thought out, doomed for failure.
